It’s been a little over a year since I last wrote about the moon, so I figure we’re due.
Bonus Fun Fact: A ‘supermoon’ is when a full moon occurs during the portion of the moon’s orbit where the moon is nearest to the Earth. That is to say, the moon is fully lit and as close to the Earth’s surface as it can get. This results in a (slightly) larger viewing of the moon in the sky. This year, there will be four such supermoons.
Bonus Bonus Fun Fact: The next supermoon will be August 1st, with another to follow on August 30th, followed by yet another on September 29th. We already missed one, which occurred on July 3rd. Sorry, everyone.
Bonus Bonus Bonus Fun Fact: When a full moon happens twice in a calendar month, the second is called a ‘blue moon.’ Blue moons usually occur every two or three years, depending on how the moon phases and calendar align. The name has nothing to do with the color blue, or the mental state of the moon.
