Ol’ Madagascar

This week’s fun fact has absolutely nothing to do with the oncoming new year.

Bonus Fun Fact: Madagascar is the oldest island in the world.

Off the east coast of Africa, the island of Madagascar was formed somewhere between 80 and 100 million years ago. Specific times are tough in geology. At some point in or around that time range, the landmass split off during the breakup of the supercontinent that would form Africa and India. Ever since, Madagascar has stood isolated, giving rise to its wealth of biodiversity.

Bonus Bonus Fun Fact: Madagascar is home to an estimated 200,000 species of flora and fauna, including all of the world’s lemur population.

Michelle and I went on a back-of-house lemur encounter at the Henry Doorly Zoo once. We fed them raisins. Their hands are so soft!

Thank you to everyone for the outpouring of support for my job change and move. I am very fortunate to have such good people as yourselves in my life.

The oldest island in the world, Madagascar, lies off the east coast of Africa. I tried to find a picture of a lemur from our zoo encounter, but then I remembered I don’t think we were allowed to take pictures. Memories will have to suffice.
