Pollen protein

Bonus fun fact: The pollen of flowers can contain more than twice as much protein as your average slab of beef. Pollen grains are composed of 2.5 to 61 percent pure protein, most of which is kept in a central cavity of succulent protein goo. By comparison, beef is about 26 percent protein, by weight. That’s why you don’t see bees flying around with steaks dangling from their little legs.

A veritable smorgasbord of pollen proteins ripe for the picking by pollinators. Incidentally, this photo was taken in a really nice 3rd year pollinator planting in Cass County, Iowa, back in 2017. It’s also one of my favorite pictures.
