Walk this way

You may have recently seen a video floating around of a colossal alligator doing a ‘high-walk’ through a neighborhood in Florida. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth a search. Typically, we think of alligators as walking on their bellies, with their legs splayed to the sides. To see one high-walking is not unusual, but certainly more terrifying.

Bonus Fun Fact: Alligators cannot move backwards while walking on their bellies. I had originally heard that alligators cannot move backwards at all. However, after some research, I found out that this only applies when they’re on their bellies. While in high-walk mode, they are much more maneuverable, but it takes more energy for them to walk that way.

Bonus Bonus Fun Fact: Kangaroos cannot move backwards at all; they can only hop forwards.
