The monarch migration is now officially in full swing! Each year the eastern population of monarch butterflies make their journey southward to Mexico, travelling up to 3,000 miles from the eastern United States and Canada. While sitting on our patio last night, we saw several monarchs flying southward. Good luck, little buddies!

Bonus Fun Fact: Peak numbers of monarchs can be seen in Iowa between September 8th through September 21st. During this time, the populations from areas north of us are making their way through our state. Blooming wildflowers in native plantings, roadsides, and gardens serve as important nectar sources for these travellers.
Bonus Bonus Fun Fact: On average, monarchs travel about 26 miles per day to reach their destination by November 1st. Consider that for a moment. It’s like running (or walking) a marathon every day for a month and a half. Amazing!
