Bonus Fun Fact: A hummingbird’s tongue is about 3-5 times as long as their head is (depending on the species). If you think about how long your tongue is compared to your head, maybe you can appreciate that. Hummingbirds stick that long thing down into tubular flowers to lap out the nectar. Their tongues are so long that they wrap back under their little jaws and up around the backs of their skulls when not being flicked out. Can you touch your tongue to the back of your skull?

Bonus Bonus Fun Fact: The tongues of many woodpecker species are also quite long and wrap around the backs of their skulls for storage (and shock absorption).
