Handsome hummers

Bonus Fun Fact: We only have one breeding resident hummingbird in Iowa, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. You might see other hummers migrating through, but we only have one that spends its summer in Iowa making babies.

Illustration of male (red throat) and female (on nest) Ruby-throated Hummingbird from Chest A. Reed’s The Bird Book, 1915.

Bonus Bonus Fun Fact: Ruby-throated Hummingbird nests are about the size of a large thimble and are built from materials such as thistle and dandelion down, lichen, and spider silk. It sounds like something straight from a fantasy movie about faeries!
