Staring contest

Bonus Fun Fact: Snakes are champions of the staring contest — they don’t blink. Literally! That’s because they don’t have eyelids. Instead, they have transparent scales over their eyeballs to protect them. You can see this if you come across the shed skin of a snake — they eyeball scales will be there!

On an associated note, I tried to find out if snakes lick their eye scales to clean them, like some other reptiles do. I couldn’t find anything conclusive in my short search, but ‘do snakes lick eyeballs’ could be one of the strangest Google searches in my browser history.
