Psychosomatic suds

Bonus Fun Fact: The bubbles that most soaps make don’t actually add to the cleaning power — they’re added to make you feel like the soap is doing something. It’s a lather of lies!

The real cleaning action takes place on a molecular level, where we can’t see it happening. The soap molecules break down the grease or dirt and surround the resulting particles. The encapsulated particles of filth can then be readily washed away. This all happens regardless of how many suds you have in your tub.

The apparent fact is, that companies add a chemical to the soap that makes it lather and froth, creating the bubbles that we know and love. This is done for marketing purposes more than anything, so that we can see the soap is seemingly doing its job. If you’re like me, this may be hard to accept. Shocking even. It goes against everything you’ve been taught about washing all sorts of things. That’s because we have been brainwashed — dare I say, bamboozled — by bubbles.

Credit for this fun fact goes to my wife, for being right in our passionate discussion about dish detergent.
