Soils 101

Bonus fun fact: The terms dirt and soil aren’t synonymous. In fact, a good way to affront a soil scientist is to refer to their study subject simply as ‘dirt’. Don’t make this mistake! Soil is the combination of minerals, air, water, and biological material in which plants grow. It’s the good stuff. Dirt, on the other hand, is composed of mineral soil particles that have been separated from the soil and deposited elsewhere, like on your kitchen floor. So, soil is what you grow things in, dirt is what you sweep up.
