Owls are amazing

Bonus Fun Fact: I’m sure you’re aware that owls have excellent eyesight, but did you know that they are keen at hearing as well? Owls are capable of hearing prey hidden under plants, burrowing in dirt, and even under snow. Many owls have front-facing ears that are set at different heights (see diagram below). This allows them to key in on sounds not only left to right (horizontally), but also up and down (vertically). It’s like super hearing depth perception!

Owl ears are offset vertically

Furthermore, owls have special feathers on their faces that funnel sound into their ear holes. This makes their whole face function like one big ear!

Bonus bonus fun fact: Humans are very good at telling what direction a sound is coming from horizontally, but we’re really bad at sensing the source of sound vertically. This is because our ears are set at the same height! However, owls don’t have that problem. You too can hear like an owl by using your fancy human hands! Just cup your hands next to your ears, facing the palms forward, like radar dishes. Then, just offset them vertically, with one hand cupping high, and the other cupping low. Bam! Owl hearing!
